Valencia: Spain’s Best Kept Secret

Valencia is undoubtedly the best kept secret of Spain. Being the third largest Spanish city in population after the Barcelona and Madrid, Valencia has a lot in common and uncommon with the rest of the country. Lined with white sandy beaches towards the southern coast, Valencia has sky scraping rugged mountains towards the inland. Besides insane nightlife, Valencia is also known for the largest European aquarium – the Oceanografic. Small villages like Denia and Cullera add serenity to the character of Valencia.

According to the New York Times, Valencia was one of the four most affordable destinations in Europe in the year 2007. Moreover, above 5 million vacationers flock to Valencia every year in order to bask under the sun and also to explore the amazing historical sites that Valencia offers. Another reason that makes Valencia such a hot tourist destination is its distinct way of life and the fact that the city is still uninfluenced by metropolitan culture.

Valencia Location

Valencia is known to be strategically located such that traveling to other Spanish cities like Madrid and Barcelona becomes both economical as well as easy. Situated on the eastern coast of Spain, Valencia lies in somewhat middle of Madrid and Barcelona. In fact it is only 200 miles from Madrid. This distance makes Valencia a great place for a single day trip from Madrid. The city can basically be divided into two regions i.e. Costa de Valencia (the beachfront) and the historical Valencia City.

Valencia is essentially a Mediterranean city and is known for some of the most stunning beaches, captivating scenery and charming plazas. Being one of the most populous cities of Spain, the city is also known for great festivals and happenings. You can rightly call Valencia the Spanish city of fascination.

Transportation

Valencia Airport is about 5 miles towards the west of the city. Because this airport generally receives European traffic, travelers who are not form the Europe may find it much easier to first fly to Madrid and later take connecting flight to the Spanish city of Valencia. In order to travel inside the city, you can consider using Valencia Metro. Valencia Metro connects the city throughout and also has access to coastal areas and neighborhoods.

Staying in the Valencia old town is one of the best options. From here, you will be able to access Valencia’s cathedrals, plazas, restaurants and some of the most amazing sights easily.

Things to Do

If you're someone who loves historical places and contemporary architecture, Valencia is the place for you. La Lonja de la Seda (also called Silk Exchange), is a UNESCO world heritage site in Valencia. The site was built between 15th and 16th century and it presents a great example of Gothic architecture. Other must-visit places in Valencia include the L'OceanogrĂ fic and Queen Sofia Palace of the Arts.

Something else that you should not miss in Valencia is the traditional Spanish dish Paella. The dish was discovered here only and it is a must –have in Valencia.
